The prevalence of diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate. There are approximately 21 million Americans with diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, amputations (apart from trauma), and dialysis in adults. Diabetes is a leading contributor to heart attacks and strokes and is the sixth leading cause of death in United States. A significant amount of research is happening all across the nation to combat these complications. IDERC is a progressive center of research in Iowa joining in this fight.
